This artwork was created by an inmate as a form of accountability following a disciplinary infraction. Instead of imposing a punitive measure, I invited him to reflect and choose a meaningful way to take responsibility. A talented artist, he offered this piece. It represents a creative and human-centered approach to discipline, one that aligns with the spirit of Gladue principles, which ask us to consider context, trauma, and alternatives to punishment when responding to Indigenous people in conflict with the law.
