Heavies
High level gang members associated with organized crime who are heavily involved in the drug trade and known for being ruthless and violent. Within the incarceration context, heavies are at the top of the inmate hierarchy.

Inmate Lefont approached the staff station and started to question Officer Kumal’s salary stating, “I know you don’t make much here” and then quickly escalated to offering him $20,000 a month to “bring in stuff for him.” Officer Kumal testified that he immediately declined and shut the conversation down and understood that inmate Lefont was offering him money in exchange for bringing in contraband. Officer Kumal also alleged that inmate Lefont told him “he’s a big heavy and the politics have changed around here.”

Hooch
A homemade, fermented alcoholic beverage. Also called prison brew or jailhouse brew.
The colour of hooch can vary, brown-orange, brown, burgundy, red-brown, or green-yellow. It is usually detected by prison staff because of the strong fermentation stench, or when an inmate appears to be under the influence.
Officer Floyd conducts a routine cell inspection. He enters cell 11, of which inmate Singh is the sole occupant and discovers a garbage can covered with a towel. Underneath the towel is a plastic bag filled with about four liters of a liquid substance containing pieces of pulpy fruit and bread floating at the top. It smells strongly of fermentation. At the bottom of the plastic bag, there are two pop bottles filled with warm water to keep the liquid substance warm.
When he entered cell 18 for an inspection, Officer Tran noticed fruit flies in inmate Duke’s cell and a rice cooker sitting in a pool of water in the sink. Upon opening the rice cooker, he found a liquid substance with chunks of fruit mixed with bread and water, and that appeared fermented. Inmate Duke described the liquid substance as having orange juice, three oranges, and two pieces of bread. He added that he is struggling with a bad addiction, has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD), and makes brew to pass the time and cope with his addiction while incarcerated.
Officer Ramy presented that during a cell frisk he found a four liter jug wrapped in plastic. When he removed the plastic, he noticed a strong bittersweet smell with chunks of fruit and bread floating at the top. The jug was bulging due to the pressure from the fermentation process.
Correctional Supervisor (C/S) Khalil entered cell 112 and on the top shelf found a 500ml Pepsi bottle with a cloudy brown liquid substance that was bubbling at the surface. When the bottle was brought to the staff station, CS Khalil could smell a strong alcohol-like odour. Inmate White denied that it was a jailhouse brew and insisted that it was expired Pepsi.

Inmate Don explained that he went to the kitchen area because he did not want inmate Joe to put butter or shampoo in the kettle which would result in the boiling water sticking to his skin.
He said he took inmate Lucas “under his wing” and he made him look bad when he did not follow through and “bang the guy out.” He explained that he tried to talk to inmate Lucas multiple times but he kept ignoring him. He added that if he did not assault inmate Lucas, he would be hot buttered, stabbed, or harmed.
